4 Benefits of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems

Researching a new HVAC system isn’t exactly how most people want to spend their free time (our team of HVAC nerds is the exception, of course)! Most people wait until their heater or air conditioner is on its very last leg to do any research at all. With so many options available combined with an overload of product information on the internet, you might just give up. So many tired homeowners end up choosing the easiest solution: a newer version of whatever you already have. Before you call it quits on your research, we urge you to seek out the BEST solution… and that might be variable refrigerant flow or VRF systems

When our comfort consultants speak with Los Angeles homeowners, one question we ask is if there are any grievances about the current heating and cooling system. Most people don’t have any complaints… at first. But consider if any of these situations have ever happened to you:

  • Have you ever been in a thermostat war with a family member?
  • Is one room in your home consistently too hot or too cold?
  • Does the noise from your air conditioner banging on and off ever keep you awake at night?
  • Are your energy bills getting higher and higher every summer?
  • You repair your AC, only for the heater to have a problem that same year?

Suddenly, replacing your HVAC with a similar model doesn’t sound so appealing, does it?  A VRF system is a new type of heating and cooling unit that solves many common home comfort problems.

1. Room by Room Comfort

A variable refrigerant flow system is unique compared to a traditional A/C because of zoning. When you have a VRF system installed, every room in your home can have a different temperature setpoint. Just think; you could keep your living room at a crowd-pleasing 72F, but turn down your bedroom temperature to 68F to sleep. No more fighting over the thermostat! And remember that one room that never seems to be the right temperature? Consider that problem solved with a VRF unit.

2. Energy Savings

VRF units come standard with energy-efficient components. But one thing that separates a variable refrigerant flow unit from a traditional split DX unit is the ability to run at many different speeds. Most air conditioners work by turning on, then turning off – kind of like a light switch. VRF units work more like a light bulb dimmer, only using the exact amount of power needed to serve the spaces.  So, if you have a room that goes empty most of the time like a guest bedroom or a bonus space, why spend the money to keep it cold or warm? With a VRF unit, you can save energy by only turning the HVAC on in those spaces when you need it.

3. Quiet as a Library

Gone are the days of an air conditioning unit roaring outside your window. And if that equipment is right outside a bedroom window, it can make for a long night of trying to sleep. VRF units are so quiet, you will be surprised they are operating at all. That makes these heating and cooling units perfect for families with newborns or other sleepers that are sensitive to noise.

4. Combined Heating and Cooling

Keeping track of home maintenance is hard enough – having a separate heater and air conditioner is double the work. A VRF unit is an all-in-one heating and cooling unit. In the HVAC industry, we call this a heat pump. Heat pumps are perfect for our mild climate in the San Fernando Valley. One system means less maintenance, which means less to worry about. Plus – it is much more affordable to buy one VRF heat pump than purchasing a furnace and air conditioner separately.
