When it comes to home improvement and keeping your home environment comfortable, there is a lot of information (and misinformation) out there, making it hard to discern fact from fiction. Below, we’ve put together a list of the most common home-related myths that you shouldn’t believe.

Don’t Believe These Home Improvement Myths

Here are just a few myths and misconceptions that could be holding you back from enjoying your home space:

Myth #1: Any type of remodeling project can add value to your home.

The Truth: While there are many home improvement projects that can make your home more comfortable while adding value to property, not every remodeling project increases the value of your house. For instance, while kitchen and bathroom remodels tend to raise the value of a home, purchasing brand new appliances may not be a worthwhile investment before selling your home as many new homeowners have a preference on appliances and may intend to replace anyway.

Myth #2: Going green is expensive.

The Truth: Though some energy efficient additions may require a significant up-front investment, many of these additions can actually save you money in the long run, such as energy efficient appliances or solar panels. Additionally, not every energy efficient improvement is costly. For instance, improving your insulation and sealing cracks and gaps around your doors and windows is fairly affordable and easy to do on your own.

Myth #3: I can make all my home improvements myself.

The Truth: Unless you are a professional handyman and know exactly what you are doing, we don’t recommend taking on every home improvement project on your own. Though you might want to DIY to save a little money on labor costs, the truth is that if you don’t know how to make the fix or improvement in your home, you will most likely end up doing more harm than good. Not only could you fail to fix the problem, but you could even make the problem worse, leading to an even more costly repair than if you had called a professional in the first place.

Myth #4: If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

The Truth: Though this may work for some things around your house, the truth is that home maintenance and making ongoing improvements can make your home a safer and more comfortable place to live. Not to mention, taking care of your home helps you maintain or increase the value of the property when you decide it’s time to sell. Make an effort to schedule ongoing maintenance on your home systems, such as your heating and cooling equipment. This can help ensure that your system is running smoothly and efficiently.

Now that you know the truth about your home, don’t let these myths hold you back from creating a comfortable, safe, and happy environment for you and your family.
